You Look Like Me Leads Menstrual Health Initiative Supporting Young Girls in Jackson
From September 3rd through September 12th, You Look Like Me (YLM) hosted a community Hygiene and Period Drive in partnership with the Delta Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. The initiative focused on providing young girls with essential menstrual products while raising awareness around menstrual equity and period poverty in the Jackson community.
This collaborative drive ensured girls would have access to the resources they need to feel confident, supported, and prepared during their cycles.
On September 24th, YLM teamed up with The Pupa Project to visit Bailey APAC Middle School, where both organizations co-led a menstrual health and hygiene education session. Together, volunteers guided students through understanding their menstrual cycles, proper hygiene practices, and hands-on demonstrations on safely and confidently using period products. Students were encouraged to ask questions and participate in an open, stigma-free conversation about their bodies and wellness.
After the presentation, each student received a hygiene and period-care package prepared from community donations. Remaining products from the drive were donated to the Yellow House Shelter along side Destyne Baker to support additional girls and women across Jackson.
Empowerment Through the POWER Program
This initiative directly aligns with YLM’s Preparing Outstanding Women for Excellence & Resilience (POWER) program a branch dedicated to guiding young women through mentorship, education, and service.
POWER is rooted in the belief that when girls are educated, equipped, and encouraged, they grow into confident leaders and resilient women.
“Education, dignity, and empowerment go hand in hand. Teaching young women about their bodies and giving them access to essential resources builds confidence and resilience the exact mission of POWER.”
Through this event, YLM and The Pupa Project created a supportive space for girls to feel informed, valued, and prepared furthering YLM’s commitment to lifting young women and strengthening the community.
By merging education, access, and empowerment, You Look Like Me continues to stand as an advocate for young women, ensuring they are seen, supported, and equipped to rise confidently into the future.
