You Look Like Me Hosts Free Basketball Camp at Murrah High School to Empower Youth On and Off the Court

On August 7, You Look Like Me (YLM) hosted a powerful and action-packed Basketball Camp at Murrah High School the very school where YLM CEO Avaughn Johnson once walked the halls and represented the Mustangs on the court. Fueled by a desire to give back to the community that shaped him, Johnson alongside Co-CEO Sanya Griffin created a camp that was not only completely free, but also meaningful and impactful for the 50 campers who participated.

This camp wasn’t just about developing skills on the court it was about creating access, building confidence, and preparing students to succeed in all areas of life.

Each camper received a back-to-school supply package filled with essentials like binders, paper, notebooks, highlighters, markers, pencils, pens, and much more. In addition, Darren Wilkerson, a professor at Auburn University, generously donated books to further support the campers’ academic growth.

The event was made possible thanks to the generous support of community sponsors, including:

• The Jackson Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi

• The Delta Delta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi

• Jackson Heart Study

• GA Carmichael Health Center

• Capitol Funds Tax Services LLC

• Citizens National Bank

When it came to equipment, basketballs were provided by USA Basketball and supporter Jennifer Lynne, ensuring every camper had the tools they needed to train and play.

The day began with dynamic stretches and conditioning led by Coach Jordan, a strength and conditioning expert who helped prepare campers physically for the work ahead. Throughout the camp, former and current college athletes, along with high school coaches, volunteered their time to help coach, mentor, and motivate the students.

The camp also featured two powerful guest speakers. Jarek Peterson, MR. JSU who spoke to students about leadership, self-respect, and purpose, while Jason Gibson, motivational speaker and Jackson State University alum, delivered an inspiring message on perseverance and dreaming big.

For CEO Avaughn Johnson, a proud Murrah Mustang, this event was about more than basketball. It was about creating an opportunity he wishes he had as a student an opportunity rooted in community, empowerment, and belief.

Under the leadership of CEO Avaughn Johnson and Co-CEO Sanya Griffin, You Look Like Me continues to invest in youth development in every form academically, physically, and personally. The Basketball Camp is just one of many initiatives designed to help students believe in themselves and their potential.

Because at YLM, You Look Like Me isn’t just a name, it’s a promise. A promise that says: “If I can do it, so can you.”
