From Fresh Cuts to Dorm Essentials YLM’s Sunday Funday Supports Students for the Semester Ahead

You Look Like Me (YLM), in collaboration with Jackson State University student leaders Mycah Robinson, Taniya Degrate, and the NAACP Chapter of Jackson State University, successfully hosted its Back to School: Sunday Funday event on Sunday, August 17 at the Mississippi Civil Rights Education Center. The event welcomed students from 3–6 PM, offering a day of inspiration, preparation, and community as scholars geared up for the new academic year.

Created to ensure students step into the semester looking and feeling their best, Sunday Funday provided free haircuts, food, fun activities, and giveaway bundles filled with essential items for dorm life. From self-care support to school prep, the event equipped students to start strong and feel empowered in their academic journey.

“Confidence matters. When students look good and feel good, they show up stronger in the classroom and in life,” organizers shared. “This event was about showing our students that they are seen, supported, and valued.”

The energy remained high throughout the afternoon as attendees enjoyed music, fellowship, and a welcoming environment centered on encouragement and student success. Volunteers, barbers, and student leaders worked together to make sure every participant left refreshed, uplifted, and ready for the year ahead.

JSU student content creator Ahriel Pringle captured a visual and written recap of the event, highlighting the significance of community based support and the message behind the program: empowerment through confidence and culture.

Celebrating Community & Confidence

Smiles, fresh cuts, and full care packages filled the room, serving as a reminder that preparation goes beyond supplies  it includes emotional support, positive spaces, and believing in young people.

YLM extends sincere gratitude to the event partners, volunteers, barbers, and student participants who helped make Sunday Funday meaningful and impactful.

Looking Ahead

YLM remains committed to uplifting youth and fostering spaces that empower students to grow, succeed, and show up with pride. More initiatives and programming are on the way as we continue to build confidence, community, and leadership among young scholars.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Sunday Funday.

Here’s to a powerful, confident, and successful school year ahead!
